Abstract: Immigration to France is strongly marked by the country’s colonial past as well as by the longstanding tradition to recruit foreign labor. In the course of the last century, immigration has gained increasing importance. While immigration for a long time has been regarded as a success story from an economic point of view, over the last three decades it has been increasingly perceived as a cause of social problems and tensions.
