In 2015 there are about 60 million refugees in the world - more than ever before. Against this backdrop, the number of asylum seekers in Germany and Europe is increasing – a development that sparks fierce and emotional debates, although only a very small share of global refugee flows actually arrives in the global North. The study commissioned by terre des hommes Deutschland e.V. and Welthungerhilfe e.V. aims to contribute to a more objective and informed discussion on this issue. Its main focus lies in the question whether, or to what extent, migration from countries of the global South to countries of the global North offers economic and social development potential for the sending countries. It analyzes the chances and challenges of such migrations for the migrating individuals, their families and social networks as well as their countries of origin and destination on the basis of specific country case studies. The study pleads in favor of a much broader understanding of development cooperation which is too often regarded mainly as instrument driven by the interests of the global North to mange migration flows in their attempt to prevent "unwanted" and unregulated immigration.eng
